The Gamma Alpha chapter is proud to offer award opportunities for active Gamma Alpha chapter members or LLU-SN students.  The following provides a description of each available award (requirements vary by award).

All applications (submitted by you or a nominator) must be submitted electronically, due May 11 by midnight.
Incomplete or late applications will not be reviewed.
The awardee will be notified by letter from the chair of the awards committee.
All awardees are expected to attend the Induction ceremony in June of the award year.
Award decisions are made by the Awards committee and are based on quality of the application and supporting documents.

Monetary Awards

Each recipient will receive sponsorship of membership dues for one year.

Excellence in Clinical Practice Award

The Clinical Practice Award is conferred annually to an active Gamma Alpha Chapter member currently engaged in clinical nursing practice in an in-patient or out-patient facility, who best demonstrated the values established by Sigma Theta Tau International. Excluded are nurses whose primary responsibilities are not direct patient care (e.g. nurse manager, director, nurse educator, etc.). 

Excellence in Education Award

The excellence in education award is to recognize members who spend a significant portion of their professional career involved in educating clinical nurses or nursing students and best demonstrates the values established by Sigma Theta Tau International. Must be currently involved in the education of students or staff nurses.

Excellence in Leadership Award

The excellence in leadership award is a relatively new award is awarded to an active Gamma Alpha member who demonstrates superior leadership in the nursing profession. The awardee will have made a significant contribution to leadership in nursing.  Must be engaged in nursing administration, health systems research, or leadership education in a school of nursing.

Excellence in Mentorship Award

The excellence in mentorship award is an award to be conferred on an active Gamma Alpha member who demonstrates superior mentoring in the nursing profession. Mentees can be nursing students, new graduates, or colleagues. The applicant will have made a significant contribution to the education and professional development of others in the nursing profession and/or development of an STTI chapter. Must be engaged in clinical practice, research, or education and a sustained mentoring relationship over time and demonstrated creativity or innovation in the mentoring role.

Excellence in Research Award (in honor of Catherine Graf)

This award was established in 1990 to honor Catherine N. Graf, School of Nursing Administrator at the Loma Linda Campus from 1944-1954.   Dean Graf was a strong supporter of faculty engagement in research.

The purpose of this award is to recognize members who spend a significant portion of their professional career involved in research and who best demonstrate the values established by Sigma Theta Tau International.  Must be involved in research activities that contribute to nursing science, mentor other researchers, or promote research education, while demonstrating a sustained research trajectory.

Excellence in Writing Award (in honor of Clarice Woodward)

The award was established in 1986 to honor Clarice Woodward, RN, MS, Professor and Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs, Loma Linda University School of Nursing, for her invaluable support to nursing authors.

The award recognizes excellence in writing, annual membership renewal and the author‘s name engraved and placed on the Clarice Woodward Excellence in writing plaque in the School of Nursing. Two awards may be given annually at the Chapter induction ceremony to chapter members who have published or accepted for publication, an article of exceptional quality in a refereed professional journal within the past two years.

Recognition Award

Active Gamma Alpha members are encouraged to nominate a non-nurse colleague for the Friend of Nursing Award.

Friend of Nursing Award

The “Friend of Nursing” Award is conferred by local chapters and recognizes an individual or organization that is not eligible for regular membership but has impacted the chapter, the local nursing or health care community, and/or the health of people in a significant way.

Grants and Scholarships

Eligibility for Grants and Scholarships require active membership in Gamma Alpha or be a current student enrolled at LLUSN (requirements vary).

Research Grant (up to $1000.00 available per year)

The purpose of the research grant is to encourage research by qualified nurses and/or nursing students who are learning to conduct research to advance knowledge in the area of nursing science. The amount of the award for any research project may range from $500.00 - $1000.00. Funding will be based on: (a) quality of the proposal design and methodology, (b) contribution of the research proposed to nursing and society, (c) adherence to human subjects’ protection, and (d) justification of the research proposal budget. If the applicant is a student, s/he must have already successfully defended the proposal and be ready for implementation/data collection.  Disbursement of funds will follow IRB approval.  Grant funds must be used within one year.

LLU-SN Student Scholarships ($500.00 each; 2 undergraduate and 2 graduate)

The purpose of the student scholarship awards is to support student progression in school as well as acknowledge academic achievement, demonstrated professionalism, integrity, good citizenship, and involvement in professional or community activities (e.g. NSNA, service activities to others, tutoring, ASN officer, class officer, research activities, Street Medicine, etc.).  This scholarship award also provides an opportunity to document the award in the student’s resume and will build the professional portfolio. Two undergraduate scholarships are available (minimum GPA 3.0), and two graduate scholarships are available (minimum GPA 3.5)
